Our fuel mix

It’s really simple. Just 2 sources: renewables and natural gas.

As an independent energy supplier, our focus has always been on our customers, rather than generating our own power. So we buy gas and electricity from the energy market, and then offer it to you at competitive rates.

All of our renewable electricity is backed by renewable electricity certificates.

Here’s what goes into our electricity

These figures show you a breakdown of our electricity fuel mix for the period April 2018 to March 2019. The UK average breakdown comes from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

We’ve taken nuclear and coal out of our fuel mix, so that our electricity is left with only renewables and gas.

We do this because, even though nuclear is less carbon-intensive than other fossil fuel alternatives, there is no safe, reliable solution for dealing with the radioactive waste that nuclear plants leave behind. And we don’t want to put any dangerous waste in the ground. We’ve also completely removed coal from our mix because it’s the most carbon-intensive energy source around.

Doing more for our planet

As part of our pledge to get to net zero by 2030, from the 1st October 2019 all our energy plans (Online Fixed and Online Variable) bring you 50% renewable electricity, as standard 1.

1 With effect from 1 October 2019, we purchase at least 50% of electricity from renewable sources such as wind, solar and hydro. There is no additional environmental benefit to the Online Fixed or Online Variable tariffs. If we supply your gas too, then note that this is not applicable to the gas part of your plan.
